This is an example of how to use Chrome's built in speech recognition with Google docs.
Google Docs does not have built in speech recognition but Chrome/Google.com does.
- Open up a Google docs document in Chromium.
- Hold down control and tap n for a new window.
- Navigate to Google.com.
You should see a microphone icon on the right side of the search box.
Begin sequence
(dictate, copy/paste a sentence at a time.)
- Click the microphone and speak a sentence.
- Hold down control and tap a to highlight the entire sentence.
- Hold down control and tap c for copy.
- Hold down alt and tap tab navigate back to google docs.
- Hold down control and tap v for paste.
- Hold down alt and tap tab navigate back to Google.com
repeat the sequence
Hint: Start with a period to get Google to space and capitalize correctly.
Voice dictation is far from perfect. But it is an effective tool especially for a dyslexic user.
Okay, here's a slightly better answer. Instead of using a google search window, install the speech recognizer application for chrome. This application allows you to build larger blocks of text before copying/pasting into Google docs.
ReplyDeleteThis application still does not capitalize the beginning of sentences. And the trick of starting with a period puts in extra spaces in the sentence. So you need to edit the beginning of each sentence.
I installed the application using an account outside the google apps for education domain. Once installed, it worked for all users.
This totally rocks! I am using it like a charm! Just what I needed. Thanks!
DeleteIf you have an Android device with Android 4.0+, go to the Google Drive app and directly use Google's speech-to-text from there. Works really well, and it does the correct capitalization and you can say "period" or "semicolon", etc.
ReplyDeleteim with him its true i do it too!
DeleteI have also used this method, but I think Google Drive will now have voice dictation on it, which is very conveniently because I can use this service literally everywhere.
Deletedoes it work on ipad or iphone?
ReplyDeleteyes.
DeleteCaleb Allen you rock.
ReplyDeleteAnd how to enable Google's speech-to-text when you opened Google Document?
ReplyDeleteTap into your document so the keyboard appears. Bottom left is where you can find the microphone button. Use that.

ReplyDeleteGo into any google doc you are working on, then on the tool bar, under Tools, Voice Typing. As long as you have a microphone, this should work. For me, it works great! Actually, it is more accurate and better that the speech-to-text function even on my Galaxy Note 5.
